RALLY TO SAVE KTRU! SUNDAY AUGUST 22, 2pm AT RICE UNIVERSITY

Join us in a peaceful, non-violent protest to Save KTRU this Sunday, 2:00 pm at Rice University, in the Academic quad in front of the statue of William Marsh Rice. Wear your KTRU t-shirt, make a clever picket sign, bring your friends, and be prepared to make some noise for college radio.

The rally will feature speeches from station manager Kelsey Yule, community DJ Greg Starks, post-punk show DJ Lindsey Simard, Revelry Report DJ Matt Wettergreen, Rice University/KTRU alumna Heather Nodler, Rice student DJ Kevin Bush, Rice student DJ Joey Yang, Professor of Computation and Applied Mathematics Steven J. Cox, Professor of Composition and Theory at The Shepherd School of Music Arthur Gottschalk, and General Manager of KPFT Duane Bradley.

There will be an informal pre-protest gathering before the rally starting at 11am, Sunday, August 22nd, at Valhalla in Rice University where you can help us make signs, write chants, and print t-shirts before we walk over to Willy’s statue at 1:30pm.

Please contact me the week of 8/30 after I return from Galveston. I am a lawyer in the Houston Heights with 10 years of litigation experience. I most recently helped First Colony residents in their fight against the $11,000,000 FCCA Amenities Plan. Please look on Channel 13 or 39 for video clips of the fight to Stop the Splash Park and Save teh Pools. The best clip is on Channel 39 and is called “First Colony Residents Dive Into Pool Fight” or something like that.

    Thanks.
    SAVE KTRU!

  2. Cyndi Smith (ktru & rice alum)

a simple and VERY obvious chant:

    Stay true to ktru
(with ktru properly pronounced as “kay-true”)

  3. Josh Levin

or piggybacking on Cyndi’s idea, “hey Rice: be true!” (play on “to Rice be true” and the station name.)

Health and safety are much more important than any radio station protest.

Don’t we have a United States National Weather Service Heat Advisory in the works for this coming Sunday?

Are you prepared for children and older folks showing up at 2 PM Sunday in front of the statue of William Marsh Rice?

Can it get any hotter than standing in front of that statue with no shade at 2 PM on the day of a heat advisory in Houston,Texas?

Are cool-down stations planned? Cases and cases of cool bottled water in the works? EMT service notified? Rice Health Center notified?

Lets not be negligent with health and safety planning!

Did I read the Houston Chronicle article correctly? While getting a ‘face-saving’ question quoted, Tilman Fertitta actually voted FOR the UH/KTRU deal? Was his, in fact, the swing vote that made it so close? Non-violent protest idea that will save your toddler from the searing Texas heat: Boycott Landry’s Restaurants?
Fish heads, fish heads, rolly-polly fish heads…don’t eat them up.

Totally blown away. As a concert promoter and booking agent, I have given away 1000’s of tickets, done tons of band interviews and had many KTRU sponsored events since the 80’s, with Rice Radio. Extremely upset to see these kind of politics defacing the Houston Music Scene. This is not only one of the very best college radio stations in the country, it also develops careers for artists and music industry professionals, including myself. Stop destroying future lives, and keep KTRU!

For those with health and safety concerns:

    1. We have a sound permit

    2. There will be RUPD police officers present

    3. The administration is aware and approves our demonstration

    4. We will have a water station provided and, hopefully, water guns!

    5. Rice EMS certified EMTs are notified and will be on call

    6. Please park in Rice Visitor parking lots. Anyone parked on the inner loop with their flashers on (unless you are a television media vehicle) will probably be ticketed. See this map of Rice for more info on visitor parking lots: http://www.rice.edu/maps/maps.html

    7. The rally is on a tight schedule. No unauthorized, pre-contacted speakers will be allowed mic time. But you WILL be allowed plenty of chanting/yelling time.

    8. Old folks and children are more than welcome! Bring your families. Bring your dogs!

    Three cheers for the protest!

Gary raises a valid point, staying hydrated will make for happier and healthier protesters. Coolers of water, ice and even Gatorade (if you’re feeling fancy) are a good idea.

    All we are saaaaaaying
    Is give Kay-TRU a chaaaaaance!

    Hello,
I will attend the protest tomorrow, but why is this being done at 2pm? I think if the protest was held at 6pm then a lot more people would attend.
