KTRU student management condemns Rice, UH’s deception in KTRU deal
Texas Watchdog excerpts show both institutions colluded to conceal negotiations

HOUSTON, TEX– KTRU’s student management and the members of Friends of KTRU, a group of students, alumni and community members dedicated to stopping the sale of the radio station’s assets, strongly condemn the actions taken by Rice University and University of Houston to conceal the KTRU deal.

“Today’s article in the Texas Watchdog reveals just how desperate Rice and UH were to keep the pending KTRU deal under wraps,” said KTRU Station Manager Joey Yang. “From making up cover stories in order to mislead KTRU staffers, to using false call letters to keep KTRU out of the public record, it seems the administrations of both universities were trying to deceive Rice students and the general public. Their actions demonstrate a questionable commitment to openness and transparency.”

Yang urged anyone concerned about the pending KTRU sale to participate in the FCC’s public comment period, which runs until Dec. 2. Information about how to contact the FCC, your local congressperson, and spread the word is located at:

I have read the Texas Watchdog articles and read several of the posted e-mails between, UH and Rice. I am no legal expert, but it seems to be that there is credible evidence that both UH and Rice purposely conspired to not only keep the pending KTRU sale secret, but also may have violated laws along the way. I think it is time for a formal investigation of any criminal wrong-doing by both UH and Rice. How do we get the Texas Attorney General and/or the Harris County District Attorney to look into this?

Received a call this evening from one of the student fundraisers touting the annual alumni campaign. He kept trying to explain to me how these funds were somehow not accessible by the President of the University and were separate or something. Basically just told him I have been around Rice for 50 years, and while the President says the secrecy surrounding the KTRU deal is one time only, I see it as setting a precedent. Told him Leebron cannot be trusted and to call me back when he leaves town. Also made sure that he was taking notes of our conversation. Was not mean but was trying to make a point, and did wish him well in his efforts on Rice’s behalf – although I’m sure he is not working for free as were the students at KTRU.
