Contact UH administration

Let University of Houston know how much you oppose the sale of KTRU’s frequency and transmitter! Please be active but civil.

The administrator/secretary may just filter everything, so try the first three contacts first.

What you might say:

“Hello, this is [NAME & UH AFFILIATION/YEAR]. I am calling to voice my strong disapproval of the pending purchase of KTRU-FM assets by KUHF, as authorized by the Board of Regents. After being informed fully of the facts, it is clear that there was lack of transparency in the sale process, and one that raises serious questions of ethics for Rice University, not to mention potential legal issues for the University of Houston under the Texas Open Meetings Act.

We, as University Of Houston alumni and students, feel a strong sense of responsibility in these events because the negotiations and purchase were done with the support of our University Board. While the actual merits of the sale could produce a healthy and constructive debate, no opportunity for input has been afforded the students and community of either University. Because of this, we want to support the Rice University community’s cry to be heard and consulted, and we expect no less from our own University.

I respectfully implore the UH Board of Regents to pause on the pending purchase of KTRU-FM assets, and begin the conversation anew, with a greater emphasis on openness and community input. Doing so will ultimately serve and strengthen the UH community more meaningfully than could assets acquired via tainted circumstances.

Regards,
[NAME, TITLE, UH AFFILIATION/YEAR]

Would it be at all productive to contact the Chancellor, or the folks below the Chancellor who would actually make the decision on completing this deal?

The agenda item approved by the UH Board of Regents states:
“Approval is requested to delegate authority to the Chancellor to negotiate and execute an asset purchase
agreement up to $ 10 million related to the purchase of a radio station for use by KUHF.”

Are there any UH students or alum interested in helping me start an online petition addressed to the UH president and Board of Regents? I’m a UH alum (MFA ’03), and, in addition to not wanting to lose KTRU, I’m disturbed by UH’s role in keeping the sale a secret from the public. As a public institution, UH has a responsibility to keep the public informed, something it failed to do in the case of the Aug. 17th board meeting in which it authorized the purchase of KTRU, or rather, “a radio station.”

I think such a petition would be most effective if it were organized and publicized by a group that included both present UH students and alum; faculty and staff are also welcome. I think we need to be sure that UH President Dr. Khator and the Board of Regents know that this isn’t just a Rice issue, and there are many members of the UH community who disapprove of UH’s role in this shady transaction.

If you’re interested in helping to organize this, please e-mail me at UHforKTRU@yahoo.com. In your message, please be sure to include your UH affiliation.

The online petition addressed to the UH administration is now up: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/UH-for-KTRU/

This isn’t just for UH people – it’s for everyone who wants to share their opinion on this issue with the UH administration.
